CranScan Privacy Policy

CranScan is a private, offline document scanner. It does not collect, store, transmit, sell or share any personal data. There are no user accounts, no analytics, no advertising, and no tracking SDKs. The only outside component is the store billing library of the platform you installed from (StoreKit on iOS, Google Play Billing on Android), which is used solely to sell and restore the one-time purchase, and which never receives your documents or their contents.

What CranScan does with your data

Everything is processed on your device. Scanning, cropping, text recognition (OCR), receipt parsing, categorization, search and export all run locally. Your documents, photos, recognized text and receipt data never leave your device.
Your library stays in the app's private storage as a plain folder of image files and a local database. You can export documents (PDF, JPEG, TXT, CSV) yourself at any time, and back up your library by copying the folder.

Permissions and why they are used

Camera (CAMERA) — to photograph documents and receipts. Camera images are processed entirely on-device and are never uploaded anywhere. The permission is optional; you can also import existing images instead.
Internet (INTERNET) — used only when you explicitly tap "Download" in Settings to fetch optional recognition packs (additional OCR language packs, and, where available, an optional on-device AI model pack). These files are downloaded from the project's public GitHub releases. No personal data, document, image or usage information is ever sent in these requests, and no network request happens without that explicit action.
Notifications (POST_NOTIFICATIONS) — to tell you when background text recognition has finished. Notifications are generated locally on your device.
Foreground service (FOREGROUND_SERVICE, FOREGROUND_SERVICE_DATA_SYNC) — lets on-device text recognition of a document you scanned finish even if you leave the app. The service only runs while it is actively processing your scans and stops when the work is done. It performs no networking and moves no data off the device.

Data retention and deletion

Your data lives only on your device. Uninstalling CranScan removes the app and all of its data. You may also delete individual documents (they move to a bin and can be deleted permanently) at any time within the app.

Children

CranScan is a general-purpose utility. It does not knowingly collect any data from anyone, including children.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the updated version will be published at this page with a new "last updated" date.
